Toshiko Takaezu Signed Studio Pottery Tile Plate

$598.00

A studio pottery tile plate by the American ceramist Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011). This square dish has slightly upturned edges and is glazed in earth tones accented with white drips. The work is signed to the underside.

Of Japanese descent, Toshiko Takaezu viewed ceramics as fine art and is considered one of the greatest abstract artists of her time. A recognized sculptor, painter, educator, and ceramic artist, Takaezu honed her artistic inclination early. She attended Honolulu Museum of Art School, the University of Hawaii where she studied under Claude Horan, and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan where ceramist Maija Grotell mentored Takaezu. Takaezu viewed her passion simply stating "In my life, I see no difference between making pots, cooking and growing vegetables... there is need for me to work in clay... it gives me answers for my life."
