An oil on canvas painting by the Hungarian-American artist Martin Friedman (1896-1981). Titled The Grotto, this abstract oil painting features a broody landscape with a full moon in the distance. A dark blue and green sky joins a pathway below in the composition. Dark trees are to the left of the composition with two nude figures standing together at the bottom left of the scene. The painting is signed bottom right, as well as signed and titled verso, and is displayed in a black and gold tone wooden frame with a linen inlay.
Martin Friedman was born in Budapest, Hungary, and moved to the United States in the 1950s where he attended the National Academy of Design in New York City. Friedman is well known for his illustration and abstract landscape work. He exhibited in the World's Fair, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum amongst many other notable institutions.
