Donald Carlson Signed Non-Objective Black Art Glass Sculpture

A 1972 non-objective art glass sculpture by the American glass artist Donald Carlson. During the 1960s, Carlson happened to take an art class while studying for his MBA and MS and discovered glassmaking. Wanting to delve deeper into this particular form of artmaking, Carlson built a studio in his backyard and taught himself to blow glass. Currently, Carlson's work focuses on creating bright and whimsical glass fruit sculptures and vases.
Made from black glass, this Carlson sculpture juxtaposes a delicate top above a more substantial base and is a rare example of one of Carlson's early abstract works. The thin corkscrew near the top center of the sculpture balances a slender stem above it, thus harkening to some of Carlson's current works of creating tall wisp-like stems for his oversized glass fruit sculptures. The lower portion of the sculpture features an orb supported by two wing-like accents standing over a pedestal-shaped base. The underside of the sculpture is signed "Carlson 72."
