Albert Coste Signed 1975 Oil on Canvas Abstract Painting
A 1975 abstract oil on canvas painting by French artist Albert Coste (1895 -1985). Signed and dated to the lower right, the painting features a composition of black, white, red, blue and yellow shapes which allude to a figure. The background is comprised of textural brushwork in tan and brown. The painting is displayed in an ornate gold tone wooden frame.
Albert Coste spent his early adulthood as a classically trained cellist but transitioned to painting after a tragic incident required the amputation of two of his fingers. Coste was a technical master who worked in multiple genres, including still lifes and environments before transitioning to abstraction within the post-war French style. Coste enjoyed a prolific five-decade career of exhibitions including collective and solo shows. In addition to his personal work, he was commissioned to paint in chapels and French government buildings.
