Beverly Pepper Signed Limited Edition Op-Art Paper Collage

$650.00

A metallic op-art paper collage by American painter and sculptor Beverly Pepper (1922-2020). The collage features overlaid metallic, yellow and blue paper cut in jagged, geometric shapes. Pepper's forms on paper are reminiscent of those used in her sculptural works of the same period. The mirrored finish aims to strengthen the relationship between the work and its environment. Signed "Beverly Pepper '68 to the lower right corner and numbered to the lower left corner. Displayed behind a white mat in a painted white wood frame.

Beverly Pepper began her artistic practice as a painter and received her degree in industrial and advertising design from the Pratt Institute. She worked unhappily as an art director in advertising before prioritizing her own art practice. In 1953, The Associated Press wrote about Pepper at the beginning of her career that “A painting by a 30-year-old American mother was hung among 60 works of many of the world’s greatest artists today in a Rome art show." Other artists in the show included Manet, Renoir, Matisse and Picasso.

After a trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Pepper turned her attention to sculpture. Her sculptural works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Hirshorn Museum in Washington, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and public spaces globally.

Pepper lived and worked in Italy through the end of her life. The New York Times published her obituary in February 2020.
