Dr. Lee Jennings Signed 1961 Oil on Board Abstract Painting


A 1961 oil on board abstract painting by American artist Dr. Lee Jennings (1928-2015). Signed "Jennings '61" to the lower left corner, the painting depicts an array of bright red, white, dark blue, green, and yellow fluid brushwork and figural shapes. The painting is displayed in a wooden frame. 

Dr. Lee Jennings was born in Willard, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio State before serving in the US Navy. After completing his service, he studied as a Fulbright Scholar in Germany. He earned his PhD in German from the University of Illinois then taught at Harvard, UCLA, and University of Texas Austin before returning to the University of Illinois, Chicago. Throughout his life, he was an accomplished musician who played numerous instruments, including accordion, violin, trumpet, and harmonica. He was a talented artist who worked with clay, oils, watercolors, photography, and computer graphics.

Age appropriate wear to the frame. The frame is split where the nails are fixed on the top left. Water damage line on the lower edge of the verso of the painting. Age appropriate wear to the edges of the canvas.
