Harry Hilson Signed 1961 “Circle and Square” Bartok Series Oil on Canvas Abstract Painting

A 1961 oil on canvas painting by the American artist Harry Hilson (1935-2004). From the early part of Hilson's Bela Bartok Series, this abstract painting titled, Circle and Square, features an array of shapes highly concentrated amongst the entirety of the painting. Vibrant layers of browns, blues, white, and orange color overlap and meld giving a dimensional effect. A white rectangle floats within a black circle that hovers over a wide stripe. The painting is signed and dated to the right side and is displayed in a simple black wooden frame.

Harry Hilson was active from the 1950s-2000. He created a variety of works, including oil paintings, ink drawings, wool tapestries, and more. His studios could be found in New York, Los Angeles, and Aspen.

55” W x 66.75” H x 1.75” D.

Condition notes:

Age appropriate wear. Craquelure present, most noticeably to the painted white square. It appears that Hilson intentionally painted the white square with a "weathered" effect, though there is also some slight age-related chipping to white square. Some scuffs to frame.
