George Nakashima Widdicomb “Sundra” Walnut Coffee Table

A Mid Century Modern Sundra coffee table designed by Japanese-American architect, woodworker, and furniture maker George Nakashima (1905-1990) for Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Composed of walnut, the elongated and low-set biomorphic table features an organic shape. Three sections of walnut accompany a slightly angled edge that overhangs three tapered conical legs. The table is marked "Sundra" to the underside with the Widdicomb manufacturer tag affixed.

George Nakashima earned a master's degree in architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1931. He was one of the leading creators of 20th century furniture design having mastered woodworking techniques under the instruction of carpenter Gentaro Hikogawa. Nakashima's signature design element is combining multiple wood slabs via butterfly joints to form large-scale tables.
