Robert Ray Signed 1948 “The Desk” Hand-Colored Abstract Etching

A 1948 hand-colored abstract etching titled, The Desk, by American artist Robert C. Ray (1926-2020). The etching depicts a colorful interior scene with various objects arranged upon a writing desk that is grounded by a chest of drawers and groupings of art. Displayed in a gold tone wood frame, the etching is titled “The Desk” to the bottom left corner and signed and dated “Robert Ray 48” to the bottom right corner.

Born in Elwood, Indiana, Ray attended the John Herron Art School in Indianapolis. After spending time abroad in Spain and Italy in 1953, he studied under Hans Hoffman in Provincetown, Massachusetts at Hoffman's School of Fine Art. Ray was also a writer and poet with several published books. In addition to being an artist, Ray also ran an interior decorating business in Indianapolis.
