Walter Sorge 1994 Signed Oil on Canvas “Fire Bush” Abstract Painting


A 1994 oil on canvas abstract painting titled Fire Bush by Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). The painting depicts an array of raised impasto abstract shapes in dark blue and purple hues. The painting is presented in a coordinating hand painted wood frame made by the artist and is signed to the upper left corner. "Fire Bush 1994" is written on the frame verso. 

Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.
