Walter Sorge Signed “Winter Storm” Abstract Mixed Media Painting
A gouache, graphite, and watercolor painting by the American artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). Signed and titled Winter Storm to the lower right, this piece depicts an abstract band of horses adorned in stable blankets colored purple, light blue, orange, and green. Flurries of white snow fill the field upon the light purple ground.
Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.
