Dr. Lee Jennings 1957 Signed Oil on Board Abstract Painting


A 1957 oil on board abstract painting by American artist Dr. Lee Jennings (1928-2015). Signed "Lee Jennings '57" to the lower right corner, the painting depicts an array of bright red, white, dark blue, orange, and yellow fluid brushwork and organic shapes. The painting is displayed in a wooden stick frame. 

Dr. Lee Jennings was born in Willard, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio State before serving in the US Navy. After completing his service, he studied as a Fulbright Scholar in Germany. He earned his PhD in German from the University of Illinois then taught at Harvard, UCLA, and University of Texas Austin before returning to the University of Illinois, Chicago. Throughout his life, he was an accomplished musician who played numerous instruments, including accordion, violin, trumpet, and harmonica. He was a talented artist who worked with clay, oils, watercolors, photography, and computer graphics.
