Gérard Koch 1968 Signed Brutalist Bronze Abstract Sculpture


A 1968 Brutalist bronze sculpture by the French artist Gérard Koch (1926-2014). This abstract work is made from an oval piece and a central piece made of a stack of three figure-like designs. The central piece of the sculpture is movable. Attached to an oval wooden base, the sculpture is signed “Koch,” dated 1968, and numbered 1/4 to the side.

Born in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Koch apprenticed under Ossip Zadkine and Henri Laurens and later studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His first solo exhibition in 1956 at Parisian gallery La Spirale. Koch was a laureate of the Berlin Ford Foundation in 1965 and later taught in Interlochen, Michigan. He has exhibited widely in Europe including the at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
