Harry Bouras 1961 Signed “Self Portrait” Wall Assemblage


A 1961 wall hanging assemblage by the American artist Harry Bouras (1931-1990). Titled Self-Portrait or An Inordinate Quest for More Than Enough, this assemblage features an array of found wood and metal objects in black and brown. The piece is signed and dated to the verso. 

Born in Rochester, New York, Harry Bouras studied art at the University of Rochester and he later moved to Chicago. He both studied at and was an artist-in-residence at the University of Chicago during the 1960s. Bouras exhibited several times at the Art Institute of Chicago and was a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in the 1970s.

Condition notes:

Signs of heavy wear to the materials the assemblage is made of. Scratches and rust present. There is a large chip in the frame at the lower left and there are several cracks in the frame. Other age appropriate wear present.
