Harry Bouras Signed 1968 “Lavafall” Abstract Mixed Media Collage on Canvas


A 1968 abstract mixed media collage on canvas titled Lavafall by American artist Harry Bouras (1931-1990). Signed, dated, and titled verso, the canvas has been painted with a black background. Paper has been adhered to the surface of the canvas, creating a combination of earth tones including black, brown, red, and teal colors. Having an abstracted composition, dimensionality is created through the differing tones of the paper used. The piece is displayed in a black wooden frame.

Born in Rochester, New York, Harry Bouras studied art at the University of Rochester and he later moved to Chicago. He both studied at and was an artist-in-residence at the University of Chicago during the 1960s. Bouras exhibited several times at the Art Institute of Chicago and was a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in the 1970s.
