This product is sold out
A wall-hanging assemblage by the American artist James Spencer Russell (1915-2000). Titled Quilt #1, this assemblage is made of predominantly wood and is composed of six hexagonal-shaped cells. Each of the cells is unique and is made up of six unique triangular-sections. Several of the sections feature wooden letter or number cutouts as well as geometric shapes or repeated designs. Several of the sections include found objects including mirrors, dice, and chicken wire. Two graphite drawings are also included in two sections. One of the sections has three wooden drawers that when removed display a paper collage of the numbers 1, 2, and 3. One of the sections hinges open to reveal a wooden egg to the interior. The cells are painted white and are signed and titled to the verso. Each of the individual cells is independent of the other and can be arranged on a wall in whatever arrangement desired.
Born in Monticello, Indiana, Russell was interested in art from a young age but was directed into pursuing a military career by his family. As a young person, he attended a military academy, became a celebrated codebreaker during WWII, and even received a scholarship to attend Westpoint. However, Russell's interest in art eventually led him to abandon his military pursuits and try to make it in the art world instead. After working as an NBC set designer after WWII, he turned his attention to becoming a full-time artist. During the 1960s, he started exhibiting his works alongside artists who would later come to characterize the art scene at the time, including Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichenstein. He later moved back to Indiana where he continued to create art until his death in 2000.
