She followed in their footsteps by leaving high school early and enrolling at the Art Students League of New York under a scholarship. She saved up money from portraits she sold to a wealthy financier to travel to Paris to train at Academie Calarossi and continued to travel around the year in the years following. For example, she moved to Mexico in the 1930s where she was commissioned by the Mexican government to paint fresco murals as well as other pieces.
