Paul Chidlaw Abstract Expressionist Style Pastel Drawing
An Abstract Expressionist style pastel drawing by American artist Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). Displayed in a black frame with a white mat, this dramatic drawing features layered frenetic shapes and colors. Initialed with a "C" to the lower right, the drawing has an estate stamp to the verso.
Born in Cleves, Ohio, Chidlaw was primarily known as an Abstract Expressionist artist. After studying at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Chidlaw moved to France where he was able to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Fountainbleau and later under the tutelage of the artists Jean Despujols and Andre L'Hote in Paris. After returning to the United States, he worked as a WPA artist painting murals and after WWII, he began teaching at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
