Paul Chidlaw Non-Objective Oil Pastel Drawing


A non-objective oil pastel on paper drawing by American artist Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). This colorful and frenetic drawing bears a Paul Chidlaw estate stamp to the verso and is displayed in a gold tone wooden frame with a white mat.

Born in Cleves, Ohio, Chidlaw was primarily known as an Abstract Expressionist artist. After studying at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Chidlaw moved to France where he was able to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Fountainbleau and later under the tutelage of the artists Jean Despujols and Andre L'Hote in Paris. After returning to the United States, he worked as a WPA artist painting murals and after WWII, he began teaching at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
