A 1956 oil on canvas abstract painting by Indiana artist Robert B. Berkshire (1932-2010). Broadly red and black, the mid-century painting depicts a montage of tangerine, crimson, sandstone, and hints of periwinkle. The abstract painting is presented in a black frame and is signed verso, "R. Berkshire Jan. '56 Roma".
Robert Berkshire, an abstract expressionist painter, was a scholarship student at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis where he became an art professor. He studied in Italy on a Fulbright Fellowship and graduated with his master's degree in Fine Arts from Florida State University in 1958. Berkshire had a profound impact on the Indiana art community and is one of Indianapolis' most well-known painters. The Robert B. Berkshire Gallery at Herron School of Art and Design was named in his honor.
