Although he did not receive formal art training in his youth, he often visited Brookgreen Gardens to sketch the statues. Abeles attended the University of South Carolina for art studies, and briefly Pratt Institute for commercial art, and the Students Art League of New York. By 1965, Abeles was an established name in New York City and his work was shown in the Museum of Modern of Art and he was awarded a grant and honor by the National Institute of Arts.
