A studio pottery bowl by American artist Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011). The bowl features two glaze finishes of a deep gray color. The exterior is a dark gunmetal gray with a lustrous sheen on the top half, and features a matte finish on the lower half of the exterior. The interior of the bowl has a luster finish. Signed on the underside.
Of Japanese descent, Toshiko Takaezu viewed ceramics as fine art and is considered one of the greatest abstract artists of her time. A recognized sculptor, painter, educator, and ceramic artist, Takaezu honed her artistic inclination early. She attended Honolulu Museum of Art School, the University of Hawaii where she studied under Claude Horan, and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan where ceramist Maija Grotell mentored Takaezu. Takaezu viewed her passion simply stating "In my life, I see no difference between making pots, cooking and growing vegetables... there is need for me to work in clay... it gives me answers for my life."
