Walter Sorge Signed “Fragmentation” Oil and Collage on Canvas Abstract Painting


A vintage abstract oil painting and collage on canvas titled, Fragmentation, by Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). A yellow, green, and electric blue vertical slash is depicted among a variety of colorful raised shapes upon a neutral ground and layered and collaged canvas pieces. The painting is presented in a black and gold tone wood frame and is signed to the upper right corner. 

Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.

The frame has age appropriate wear with nicks and scratches. Upper corners have  wrinkled canvas. Signs of age appropriate wear to the painting.
