A black and white etching of an abstract figure in an interior entitled Room-mate by Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). The balding figure wears a striped cardigan and reads quietly on a stool atop wooden floors. Think and thin repeated lines draw the viewer's eye through the work. Signed "Sorge," numbered 2/30, and titled to the lower edge.
Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.
