An abstract oil on canvas painting by American artist William Nichols (born 1942). Intersecting and overlapping areas of blue, orange, yellow and white create an illusion of depth in this 1961 work. Presented in an off white wooden frame. Dated to the verso, the painting is also signed to the verso with a note saying ti was signed by the artist in 2021.

Nichols earned a BFA in painting and drawing from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1966. Soon after, he earned an MFA degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana.  He also studied at the Slade School of Art in London and had a Fulbright Grant from 1968 to 1969. This work was made by Nichols before he began his formal art training and represents his early style. Nichols is best known for his modern botanical works.

Condition notes:

Heavy craquelure throughout. Some staining and loss of color. Overall age appropriate scratches and scuffs to the frame.
