An abstract Surrealist style gouache painting titled Cybernetics by the Spanish-American artist Xavier Gonzalez (1898-1993). The futuristic composition features fantastical structures and abstract geometric forms amongst gestural, sweeping lines that move throughout the work. While primarily black, white, and gray, the painting has a red checkered satellite-like object that seems to drift above the landscape. Signed "Xavier Gonzalez" to the lower right hand corner. Displayed behind a cream mat in a metal frame.
Born in Almeria, Spain, Xavier Gonzalez immigrated to Mexico and then to the United States in the 1920s. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City. Gonzalez exhibited widely during his lifetime including at the Corcoran Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
