An oil on canvas painting by the Italian-American artist Umberto Romano (1905-1982). Titled Flowers Against the Sky, this abstract floral still life depicts a flower arrangement of white lilies and red ranunculus in an earthenware jug painted against a blue background. Signed to the lower right, the painting is also signed and titled verso and is displayed in a black wooden frame.
Born in Bracigliano, Italy, Romano immigrated to the United States with his family as a young child and grew up in Massachusetts. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City and later studied at the American Academy in Rome. During the 1930s and 40s, Romano was the head at the Wooster Art Museum School and during the late 1960s, he taught at the National Academy of Design. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Whitney Museum, among others.
