Ulfert Wilke Ink Abstract Calligraphic Drawing

An abstract ink drawing by the German-American artist Ulfert Wilke (1907-1987). Marked with Wilke's stamp to the lower right, this drawing features a dense array of calligraphic style shapes and designs. The drawing is displayed in a silver tone metal frame and a white mat.

Wilke studied art at Harvard University and completed his master's degree in Art at the University of Iowa where he later was the founding director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art. After serving in the US Army in WWII, Wilke received the Guggenheim Fellowship twice which offered him the opportunity to live in a monastery and study Japanese Zen calligraphy under monks in Kyoto, Japan. Wilke was awarded many honors and has had many solo exhibitions internationally and within the United States during his career. His works are held at many museums including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
