Kwok Wai Lau Signed 1956 Abstract Mixed Media Painting

A 1956 mixed media painting by the Chinese-American artist Kwok Wai Lau (1931-2021). Signed and dated to the lower right, the work depicts an abstracted and minimalist landscape composted of painted black ink designs and colorful chalk pastel on brown paper. The painting is displayed in a wooden frame and an off-white mat.

Born in Hong Kong, Lau studied and then taught at the International Art School of Hong Kong until 1952 at which point he moved to the United States. He later graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Lau was awarded the prestigious Pauline Palmer Prize from the Art Institute of Chicago. He also lectured in art at the the Art Institute of Chicago and the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Condition notes:

Scratches, scuffs, and some discoloration to the frame. The artist has used intentional water stains as part of the composition.
