Rex Clawson Signed 1959 “Cathedral” Oil on Canvas Abstract Painting

A 1959 oil on canvas abstract painting titled Cathedral by American artist Rex Clawson (1933-2007). Signed and dated verso, a cathedral with two saintly figures are depicted in bright hues of red, orange, gray, white, and blue. Symbols from a variety of religions accent the cathedral throughout with a large colorful rose window at the top. The painting is displayed in a gold tone wooden frame and is also signed and dated to the lower edge of the painting.

Rex Clawson was born in America but traveled to Mexico to gain influence in his artistic style. He has received awards from the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts annual exhibition and is part of the Smithsonian's collection.

26” W x 32” H x 1.75” D (frame); 24” W x 30” H (canvas).

Condition notes:

A patch has been applied to the verso to repair a rip in the canvas as well as over-painting to the front to repair the rip. Canvas has also been relined on certain edge portions along the verso. Some areas with craquelure. Some scuffs to frame. Other age appropriate wear present.
