A 1968 Pop Art style offset lithograph poster designed by American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1923-2002). This poster advertises the 1968 St. Louis Symphony Orchestra opening at Powell Symphony Hall. Images of orchestra conductors and brass instrumentalists are layered, alternating with photos of the Symphony marquee and maps of the city of St. Louis. Neon pink, yellow and maroon lettering is overlayed atop large blocks of cerulean blue.
Milton Ernest "Robert" Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was an American painter and graphic artist whose early works anticipated the Pop art movement. Rauschenberg is well known for his Combines, a group of artworks which incorporated everyday objects as art materials and which blurred the distinctions between painting and sculpture. Rauschenberg was primarily a painter and a sculptor, but he also worked with photography, printmaking, papermaking, and performance.
