A 1944 abstract ink drawing by the British-American artist Gilbert Hancox (born 1908). This piece showcases the artist's attention to detail with thin geometric lines. The delicate strokes create a sense of precision and depth with multiple repeated patterns confined within one larger abstract shape. Signed and dated within the composition, the drawing is framed in a red metal frame behind a white mat.
Gilbert Hancox was born near London and moved to the United States at age 18. After studying at the Art Students League of New York, Hancox's early career included painting the sets for operas, television, ballets, and other productions. Most notably, he worked for the Metropolitan Opera Company. His other interest was Surrealism, creating drawings in the style through the end of his life.
