Harold Zisla Signed Abstract Oil and Pastel on Board Painting

An oil and pastel on board painting by the American artist Harold Zisla (1925-2016). This abstract work features a web of black lines with spaces filled in with vibrant color much like a stained glass window. Signed to the lower left, the work is displayed in a gold tone wooden frame.

Born in Cleveland, Zisla started studying art at the Cleveland Museum of Art while still in high school. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he received an undergradate and graduate degree in Art Eduction from Case Western University as well as a diploma in Painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art. After working as an industrial designer in the early 1950s, Zisla became the executive director of the South Bend Art Center, which later became known as the South Bend Museum of Art. In 1966, he went on to become an assistant professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University South Bend and in 1968, he became the first chair of the Fine Art Department at the school.
