A signed encaustic on canvas painting by American artist Harry Engel (1901-1968). Titled Two Artists and painted in 1951, this Cubist style painting features a self-portrait of Harry Engel and a portrait of the American artist Arthur Deshaies (both Engel and Deshaies taught at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana). The two artists are either holding a palette or a piece of art and are standing next to an arrangement of fruit and a wine bottle. Signed to the lower center, the painting is displayed in a wooden frame. 

Born in Romania, Engel came to the United States with his family as a child. He later studied art in Paris and then went on to study at Notre Dame and Columbia. Known specifically for his encaustic paintings, Engel's works have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Detroit Institute of Art, and the Grand Palais in Paris.

25.5" x 53.75" x 1.25" (frame); 23.75" x 52" (canvas).

Condition notes:

Signs of age appropriate wear. Some scratches and other wear on the frame. There are a few very small chips in the paint, as well as some signs of craquelure.
