A clay sculpture by the Italian-French sculptor Antonuicci Voltigerio Volti (1915-1989). Signed "Volti" to the side, the sculpture depicts a seated nude woman holding one of her knees.
Born in Albano, Italy in 1915, Volti's family moved to France in 1920. In 1928, he began studying at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Nice and in 1930, he joined the studio of Jean Boucher at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During World War II, Volti served in the military and was later held as a prisoner of war in Germany. After the war, Volti returned to Paris only to find his studio and all previous works of art he had created destroyed as a result of the war. In 1947, he began showing works in several Paris Salons and then in the Brussel and Antwerp Biennales in 1954 and 1955. In 1950 he became a professor of wood sculpture at the School of Applied Arts in Paris and in 1957, the Rodin Museum in Paris held a retrospective of his works. Volti's works are in several major museums, including the Musee National d'Art Moderne in Paris.
