Gene Szafran Signed 1959 Abstract Ink Portrait Drawing

A 1959 ink portrait drawing by the American artist Gene Szafran (1941-2011). This abstract work depicts a figure wearing a tight fitting cap with head inclined to one side while gazing out at the viewer. Signed and dated to the lower right, the drawing is displayed in a gold tone wooden frame and an off-white mat.

Born in Detroit, Szafran studied at the Art School of the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit. He later went on to teach there as well as at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Szafran worked as an illustrator for major publications such as McCallsCosmopolitanPlayboy, Bantam Books, and others. In 1970, he started illustrating the covers of science fiction books, which is what he is most well known for.

Condition notes:

Some scuffs and scratches to frame. Some parts of the frame's finish has been worn off. Scratches to the plexiglass. Some stray marks in margin. Strathmore Paper Company watermark to paper.
