A mid-20th century encaustic on board painting by the American artist Harry Engel (1901-1968). Titled Philorones, this muted composition depicts what appears to be a city street with windows and doorways filled with figures wearing tunics and cloaks. Signed to the lower right, the painting is titled verso and is displayed in a wooden frame.
Born in Romania, Engel came to the United States with his family as a child. He later studied art in Paris and then went on to study at Notre Dame and Columbia. Known specifically for his encaustic paintings, Engel's works have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Detroit Institute of Art, and the Grand Palais in Paris.
