Peter Bruning Plaster Bust of a Woman

A plaster bust of a woman by the Dutch-American artist Peter Bruning (1923-2018). Dark blue-green in color giving off the appearance of patinated bronze, this bust depicts a woman with hair pulled back and gazing out softly at the viewer. Unsigned, the bust is attached to a plaster cube-shaped base.

Born in Amsterdam, Bruning received a doctorate in Germanic studies, as well as minor studies in sociology and art history, at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He studied art in Amsterdam, Bern, and Paris. In 1950, he was a visiting instructor at Indiana State and later taught German and Dutch at Indiana University, University of California Berkley, and Rice University. While advancing his academic career, Bruning was also pursing his art career and participated actively in the local arts community.
