Walter Sorge “Yellow - Pink” Oil on Canvas Abstract Painting

An eight sided abstract oil on canvas titled Yellow-Pink by Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). Pink, green and blue slashes are depicted among a variety of colorful raised shapes and textures upon a yellow ground. The canvas has been created by the artist using a sewn patchwork method. The hand built frame has been painted by the artist as an extension of the work. The painting is titled and dated to the verso. 

Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.

Condition notes:

Craquelure throughout. Minor loss of color to the painting and frame. Frame is cracked toward the lower left. Some age appropriate wear to the paint.
