A 1961 oil on canvas painting by the Spanish-American artist Xavier Gonzalez (1898-1993) Titled Spanish Village, this painting depicts a village painted in expressive brushstrokes of light muted grays, golds, and blues against a brown swirling background. Signed to the lower right, the painting is titled verso and is displayed in a black and gold tone wooden frame.
Born in Almeria, Spain, Xavier Gonzalez immigrated to Mexico and then to the United States in the 1920s. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City. Gonzalez exhibited widely during his lifetime including at the Corcoran Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
