An oil on canvas painting by the American artist Hugo Pieper (1893-1976). Signed to the lower right, this abstract work uses layers of rectangles in green, blue, orange, and red to depict a cityscape of skyscrapers under a golden yellow sky. The painting is displayed in black and gold tone wooden frame.

A Chicago artist, Pieper originally started out as a house painter in order to support his family and it wasn't until his forties that he began work as an artist. Completely self-taught, he exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Women's Club, the Brooklyn Museum, as well as many other places throughout the United States. Primarily known for his paintings of downtown Chicago, Pieper also painted abstracted cityscapes such as this one.

Condition notes:

Some craquelure present as well as some chips to the paint. Some scuffs to frame. Other signs of age appropriate wear. Repairs have been made to correct losses of paint.
