An abstract oil on canvas painting by the American artist James Johnson (1925-1963). The background of the composition is split horizontally with the upper half cream in color and the lower section red. Large brushwork and splattering in shades of orange, purple, and blue are layered over the background. The work is displayed in a wooden frame, signed to the upper right corner, and signed verso.
James Johnson served in the Navy during WWII, before returning to his birthplace of New York. Johnson attended the Art Students League of New York, working in a studio next to Jackson Pollock during the height of Abstract Expressionism. Johnson was influenced by the writings of Hans Hoffman, as well as his friendship with Richard Diebenkorn. Johnson's life was cut short by a motorcycle accident at the age of 37.
