A 1960 oil on board painting by the Mexican artist Leonardo Nierman (1932-2023). Titled La Ciudad en la Nieve (City in the Snow), this abstract work depicts a vibrant cityscape painted in frenetic and bold brushwork. Signed and dated to the lower right, the painting is displayed in a bronze tone frame and is titled to the verso.
Born in Mexico City to Eastern European immigrants, Nierman, whose full name is Leonardo Nierman Mendeljis, originally wanted to be a violinist but instead studied mathematics and physics at the National University of Mexico. He began his painting career by painting murals and went on receive numerous awards and accolades, including the Palme D'Or des Beaux Arts of Monaco in 1969 and being named a lifetime member of the Royal Society of the Arts in London. Nierman's works have been exhibited worldwide including at Mexico City's Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, as well as many others.
