A ceramic coin bank designed by the American artist and designer Malcolm Leland (born 1922) for NS Gustan. This coin bank depicts a alien face with pointed ears and a pinched vase-like spout at the top. A crescent-shaped smile is cut into the surface, and the eyes and nose gently protrude from the sculpture. A small coin slot is on the back and a cork stopper is present to the underside.
Malcolm Leland s an American sculptor from Columbus, Ohio. He attended art school before serving as a pilot in World War II. Upon his return, Leland moved to California and founded Malcolm Leland Ceramics. Over time, the artist became increasingly drawn to structure. His 1957 design for the L.A. Hall of Records began a decades-long career in architectural design, defining the facades and textural elements of many Southern California buildings and plazas.
