Norman Cherner Plycraft Black Pretzel Chairs

A pair of black pretzel chairs designed by American designer Norman Cherner (1920-1987) for Plycraft. These chairs have curved plywood arms and angular plywood legs that have been finished black.The chairs are unmarked. 

Norman Cherner studied at the Columbia University of Fine Arts before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley. The pretzel chair is his most iconic design which he completed in 1958. Original pretzel chairs were produced by Plycraft until the 1970s. The Cherner Chair Company began producing the chairs in the 90s. 

 

Measurements:

25” W x 32” H x 20” D (each, pair); seat height: 15”, depth: 17”.

Condition notes:

Wear to wood finish including chips, scratches, and scuffs. There have been some repairs made to the worn wood finish.
