This product is sold out

A 1957 oil on paper painting by the American artist Russell Twiggs (1898-1991). Titled From Below, this abstract work depicts billowing colors of yellow and orange which float across a dark black background. The painting has been mounted on a piece of masonite board and finished with wax. Displayed in a brown wooden frame, the painting is signed and dated in the lower right, as well as being signed, dated, and titled verso.

Russell Twiggs, along with artists and fellow Carnegie Tech faculty members Robert Lepper, Samuel Rosenberg, and Balcomb Greene, founded the Abstract Group in 1944. The group was created in protest to the Pittsburgh art establishment's reticence to embrace abstraction. Twiggs is credited with ensuring Andy Warhol's stay at CMU's School of Fine Arts as he was being threatened with discharge from the institution. Russell Twiggs was the "true Abstract Expressionist" of the group and his work can be found in the collections of MOMA, The Whitney, The National Gallery of Art, and The Brooklyn Museum.
