A gouache painting by the American artist Atsushi Kikuchi (1918-2016). This abstract work depicts a crowded street in Chicago with traffic and pedestrians under the elevated tracks of the "L." Signed to the lower right, the painting is displayed in a blue metal frame and a white mat. 

Born in Seattle, Kikuchi spent his childhood in Japan but returned to the United States for high school. He went on to study art The California College of Art and Crafts in Oakland, The Art Center in Los Angeles, and The Art Institute of Chicago. During World War II, Kikuchi was interned with his family at a internment camp by the United States government. After World War II, he served in the US military in occupied Japan. After his military service, Kikuchi worked as a professional artist in Chicago and eventually was honored with the Robert Rice Jenkins Memorial Prize from The Art Institute of Chicago.
