A 1956 watercolor painting, titled Creation Series #1 by the Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). This abstract painting features blue, black, and green blocks of color with a black tassel-like design hanging down. In a wooden frame against a cream mat, this painting is signed “Sorge” to the bottom left, and dated and titled to verso.
Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.
