A "Chan" coffee table designed by Philip (1907-1987) and Kelvin LaVerne (1937-2025). This table features a round top with a chinoiserie design depicting a building surrounded by a wall. Figured, horses, birds, and trees are all depicted in the design. The tabletop is supported by an octagonal base with cutout style design. The top of the table is marked "Philip + Kelvin LaVerne."

A father and son duo, the LaVerne's furniture technique is a unique process that involved burying bronze and pewter in a particular soil for six weeks that oxidized the metal naturally. Their unique process of patinating metal took six years to develop. Both father and son attended art school in New York, Philip attending the Arts Student League and Kelvin starting at City College and later switching to Parsons, in addition to also studying at the Arts Student League. After attending school, Kelvin began working with his father making patinated bronze art pieces. The LaVernes saw their furniture pieces as functional art.
