A 1961 oil on canvas painting by the American artist William Arthur Lewis (1918-2020). Titled The Red Planet, this painting has a composition with ferocious brushy black and reds that move across the canvas in a diagonal path across the piece. The shape is contrasted by the pale gray and white background. Signed and dated to the bottom right, the painting is displayed in a black wooden frame. The painting is also signed, titled, and dated verso. 

American artist William Arthur Lewis was born in Detroit and studied design as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan. He joined the University of Michigan's faculty in 1949 after working as a freelance designer and illustrator. He was a founder of the Ann Arbor Potters Guild as well as a being an active member of the Michigan Watercolor Society. Over his successful career he showed his work in more than 100 solo exhibitions and his work is represented in the Toledo Museum of Art and the U.S. Navy Art Gallery in Washington D.C.
